What are the different types of gold jewelry?

There are so many types of gold finished jewelry on the market, it's hard to decipher what's what, and which type of gold finished jewelry is right for you.

So here's the break down of the different types of gold jewelry:

  • Gold plated jewelry: Gold plating is a process in which a thin layer of gold is applied to a base metal, such as brass or copper. Gold plated jewelry is less expensive than solid gold jewelry, but the gold plating can wear off over time.
  • Gold vermeil: Gold vermeil is a type of gold plating in which a thick layer of gold (usually 2.5 microns or more) is applied to a base of sterling silver. It is more durable than gold plating and can last much longer.
  • Rolled gold: Rolled gold is a type of gold plating in which gold leaf is applied to a base metal and then rolled or pressed to create a smooth surface. It is more durable than gold plating and less expensive than solid gold.
  • Gold filled jewelry: Gold filled jewelry is made by bonding a layer of gold to a base metal, such as brass. This process results in a piece of jewelry that has the appearance of solid gold, but at a fraction of the cost.
As a gold filled jewelry business, I wanted to explain the reasons why gold filled, in my opinion, is the best option on the market for every day wear:
  • Durability: Gold filled jewelry is more durable than gold plated jewelry, as the layer of gold is much thicker. The gold layer is usually at least 5% of the total weight of the piece, making it more resistant to wear and tear.
  • Affordability: Gold filled jewelry is more affordable than solid gold jewelry, making it accessible to a wider range of people. It has the same look and feel of solid gold but at a fraction of the cost.
  • Hypoallergenic: Gold filled jewelry is also hypoallergenic, making it a good option for people with sensitive skin.
  • Resistant to tarnish and corrosion: Unlike solid gold, gold filled jewelry is resistant to tarnish and corrosion, which make it more durable and long lasting.
  • It can be worn daily: Gold filled jewelry can be worn daily, unlike solid gold which should not be worn daily as it may get scratches and lose shine.
  • Easy to maintain: Gold filled jewelry is easy to maintain, it can be cleaned with mild soap and water and dried with a soft cloth.
So there you have if folks, gold filled jewelry offers an affordable, durable and hypoallergenic option for those who want the look of solid gold without the high cost.
